Day 1 of Development: Inspiration and Tone

Day 1 of Development: Inspiration and Tone

Hello everyone! I decided to take on the Complete Your Game game jam on itch.io.

There's a game that I have an idea for, for a while but it was inspired by recent events.

Quite recently, I thought that I lost my precious umbrella that I have memories of my late mother with, but I accidentally left it after a long discussion with a friend at a mall near the bus station.

So I decided to make a game about losing and finding that umbrella back.

I have decided to narrow down and simplify: based on the many approaches I could think of, from making it a fantasy theme to surreal RPG, I decided that the narrative-drive approach with minimalist visuals would be the best approach.

Hence, I don't make this an action RPG, but a top-down melancholic experience.

Engine

Despite being formally trained in Unity, C# and GameMaker, I wasn't confident enough to make the game that meets my requirements within a reasonable time frame with those engines and skills. And because I have been making games using the ClickTeam Fusion since my younger days - as early as more than 2 decades ago, I decided to make this game using CTF2.5.

Tone

Despite my recent series of tragic happenings in my family and my personal self, I'd thought that a more mellow and not-too-emotional approach to making this game would make it a much more approachable game.

Giving the game simple choices to make, and quick-and-concise visuals to sum up each decision made as well as various interactive elements, I make the game-making process as simple as possible, but make the players as curious as possible.

Closing Thoughts

I am still missing the visual assets for the transitional scenes for the transport rides and station scenes.

After adding these graphic assets using my Adobe Illustrator vector art skills, I would need to add final touches to the dialog and make it sound more natural.

I hope you find my devlog interesting and useful to understanding my approach in the game-making process!
